Public health is a whole series of individuals, communities, activities and programs working to promote health, to prevent disease and injury, to prevent premature death -- to ensure conditions in which we all can be safe and healthy.
The American Public Health Association's mission is to improve the public's health, promote the scientific and professional foundation of public health practice and policy, advocate the conditions for a healthy society, emphasize prevention and enhance the ability of members to promote and protect environmental and community health.
During its 130+ year history, APHA and its members have contributed to many of the most extraordinary social and health achievements of modern times -- achievements that have increased average life expectancy from 45 to more than 75 years. Advances in many areas of public health and a proactive effort have dramatically lessened the incidences of disease and injury. APHA has helped identify and respond to the nation's critical health issues.
Each day, APHA members working in health agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational settings, research and medical facilities tackle public health challenges every bit as tenaciously as those faced by their 19th century predecessors.
Across the country, APHA's 30,000-plus members represent a wide range of public health professionals and students. Throughout their careers, they turn to APHA for many reasons: to read the American Journal of Public Health or be published in it, to attend the Annual Meeting or speak at one, to hire a talented employee or find a rewarding job, or influence the outcome of a public health bill.
