Public Health Leaders to Speak at Connecticut Public Health Association Annual Meeting

Conference will focus on idea and information sharing

Washington, D.C., October 8, 2004- Public health leaders will speak at the Connecticut Public Health Association (CPHA) Annual Meeting, to be held Oct. 15 in Rocky Hill, Conn. Entitled “An Ounce of Prevention: Building Partnerships in Public Health,” the meeting will draw 150 public health professionals from across the state and will explore the latest findings in public health research and practice, with an emphasis on building partnerships in public health.

“Partnership happens when individuals and groups with overlapping goals come together to share resources and ideas,” said Lynn Abrahamson, MPH, RN, CPHA president. “It involves a recognition that few systems are self-sufficient and must rely on partners to meet the needs of their communities. This is especially important in public health where we are confronted daily with diverse, expanding and ever-changing challenges.”

Speakers at the conference will include:

  • Virginia Caine, MD, president, American Public Health Association (APHA);
  • Juan Figueroa, JD, president, Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut;
  • Lori Fresina, Northeast regional advocacy representative, The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids; and
  • Norma D. Gyle, PhD, RN, deputy commissioner, Connecticut Department of Public Health.

“In light of the many challenges that we face today, it is important to keep the essentials of public health in mind,” said Caine. “This conference is a terrific and timely opportunity for public health professionals across Connecticut to shape the future of public health and make progress on today’s vital issues.”

The meeting will be held at the Rocky Hill Marriott, 100 Capitol Blvd. The program and registration information is available at www.cpha.info/annual_meeting.htm. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The meeting is being promoted as a day of professional development for all Connecticut public health officials. Logistical support has been provided by Southern Connecticut State University, Department of Public Health.

Plenary sessions will address topics such as social marketing of tobacco control strategies, training the state’s public health work force, coalition building in health care and public health ethics.
