New Press Registration Deadline for 2005 APHA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia

Revised Program Will Address Public Health Emergency Across the Gulf Coast

Washington, D.C., September 15, 2005 – Due to the devastation wrought in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, the American Public Health Association’s 133 rd Annual Meeting & Exposition has been moved to Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 10-14, 2005.

The 2005 APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition is themed “Evidence-Based Policy and Practice” and will explore the processes of systematically finding, appraising and using scientific research as the basis for developing sound practices. The Annual Meeting program is being revised to address the public health emergency across the Gulf Coast, relief efforts and rebuilding of communities and the public health infrastructure. The program will include special sessions on disaster management and arrangements are being made to present additional plenary sessions on disaster recovery that will explore the lessons of the destructive hurricane.

Thousands of experts will attend to share the latest public health research and practice. The Meeting will include hundreds of sessions on significant issues in public health such as tobacco, health disparities, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and chronic disease control and prevention.

All APHA Annual Meeting scientific sessions are listed online and are fully searchable. Several news conferences are being planned for the Meeting and will be announced at a later date.
