Maine Public Health Association Annual Meeting Set for October, APHA President to Speak

Washington, D.C., September 26, 2005 - American Public Health Association (APHA) President Walter Tsou, MD, MPH, will be the keynote speaker for the Maine Public Health Association's 21st annual meeting on Oct. 3, 2005, in Augusta, Maine. The theme for the meeting is "Timely Topics in Public Health."

Tsou, the former health commissioner of Philadelphia and now a public health consultant, will discuss leadership in public health and APHA's top three priorities in the keynote address, entitled "Fighting for Public Health." The priorities are access to care, eliminating health disparities and building the public health infrastructure.

Breakout sessions at the meeting will cover public health work force shortages, advocacy and environmental health, emerging issues in public health, updates from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and public health performance standards. An afternoon panel discussion will focus on the state's health plan.
