Public Health Association of Nebraska Annual Meeting Set for September, APHA President to Speak

Washington, D.C., September 15, 2005 - American Public Health Association (APHA) President Walter Tsou, MD, MPH, will address the Public Health Association of Nebraska at their annual meeting Sept. 22-23, 2005, in Grand Island, Neb.

This year, the meeting's theme is "Public Health: Leadership, Knowledge, Action." About 150 people working in the public health field are expected to attend.

Tsou, the former health commissioner of Philadelphia and now a public health consultant, will discuss leadership in public health and APHA's top three priorities, which are access to care, eliminating health disparities and building the public health infrastructure.

Conferences will be held on topics including communicating with legislative leaders, youth and family perspectives on mental health, preventing underage drinking and treating tobacco addiction, the pandemic flu, breastfeeding promotion and facilitating community participation on health issues.

"Our 2005 conference focuses on leadership and appropriately follows the kickoff of the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute," said Rita Parris, executive director of the Public Health Association of Nebraska. "We have tried to incorporate topics that will stimulate action from the public health leaders in our state. Topics such as behavioral health, marketing, cultural issues and advocacy are some of the sessions that will address skill-building and good decision making."

The Public Health Association of Nebraska has been serving the citizens of Nebraska for 55 years.
