West Virginia Public Health Association Annual Meeting to Focus on Broad Reach of Public Health Field, APHA President to Speak

Washington, D.C., September 14, 2005 - American Public Health Association President Walter Tsou, MD, MPH, will speak at the annual conference of the West Virginia Public Health Association, which will be held Sept. 21-23, 2005, in Wheeling, W.Va.

Tsou, a public health consultant and the former health commissioner of Philadelphia, will address APHA's top priorities of access to care, eliminating health disparities and building the public health infrastructure at the 81st annual conference, entitled "Public Health Affects Everyone - The Tradition Lives On."

The keynote address will be given by George Miller, the chief executive officer of Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, Ill., who will address the importance of having a positive attitude and putting forth extra effort to give patients the best possible care.

After a general session on the first day of the conference, concurrent sessions will be held specifically for topics such as dental health, health administration, environmental health, epidemiology and nursing.

"The goal is always to educate on the new changes in every arena," said Julia Kerns, vice president of the West Virginia Public Health Association.

She added that the opening remarks by Tsou and Miller will be important learning tools for conference attendees.

"With the general session we try to address something that we all need to hear," Kerns said. "We learn a lot from our peers, and at the same time, have a great educational benefit."
