APHA Celebrates a Century of Public Health and Safety Protections on the Anniversary of the Founding of the Food and Drug Administration

Washington, D.C., June 30, 2006 – The American Public Health Association (APHA) today recognizes the 100 th anniversary of the passage of the Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906, the founding law of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The measure ushered in an era of continuous strengthening of public health protections and their enforcement.

“Americans enjoy a much longer life and higher quality life thanks largely to the many public health and safety protections established during the last 100 years, including the creation and enforcement of policies through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,” said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, executive director of APHA.

“The continued creation of science-based protections and the enforcement of those protections are essential to adequately protect the public’s health,” said Benjamin. “We look forward to our continued collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration and other consumer protection agencies as we seek to further safeguard the health and well-being of all Americans.”
